Sides of these boxes feature miter-and-spline joints (45-degree edges joined with thin wood pegs ang glue) for strength, durability, and attractive appearance. Many have inner wooden linings that rise above the bottom section and make gentle contact with the lid upon closing, giving them a firm seal. Most are made of linden, beech or poplar, woods that are great for crafts: |

They are relatively soft, but unlike pine or fir, have minimal grain, so they are ideal for carving or wood burning. (A few of the largest boxes, where noted, have poplar or birch plywood top panels, which are less suited to carving and can't be burned as deeply.) |

| These boxes are also ideal for painting and decoupage. Side panels are 1/4" to 3/8" (7-10mm) thick. Most come medium sanded, and need a final sanding before finishing with stain or paint. Most are lightly varnished inside, and have 1/8" poplar or birch plywood bottom panels. |
